The Beatles!

The Beatles! What can be said of them? They blazed unto a generation like sun gods. In them the magic of music fused so dynamically with the magic of personality that society opened at its seams. Through their music, manner, appearance, and dazzling presence, they radiated an abandon, an innocence, a gaiety, an irreverence; images that mesmerized millions upon millions of the young and not a few adults. They were frivolity incarnate, casting an illusion of a care-free-world-come-true – love troubadours to the type! . . . Then midway in their career they unexpectedly – at least to their fans and critics – swerved into apostles of a visionary message that turned romantic love into transcendent Love! And this telling book tells and sings their story of that transition told by themselves.

JOHN LENNON

* Changing the lifestyles and appearance of youth throughout the world didn't just happen. We [The Beatles] set out to do it. We knew what we were doing.

* This [The Beatle phenomenon] isn't show business. It's something else. This is different than anything anybody imagines. You don't go on from this. You do this, and then you finish.[stated in 1963]

* [Interviewer: What do you think is the one single thing that most contributed to your phenomenal, unprecedented success? Any single thing?

John: (slight pause) "Umm, God."

Paul: "I'll second that."

PAUL MCCARTNEY

* There'd never been anything like The Beatles, who were about music but also something more far-reaching.

* We just happened to become leaders of whatever cosmic thing was going on. We came to symbolize the start of a whole new way of thinking

* The issues are the same. We wanted peace on earth, love and understanding between everyone around the world. We have learned that change comes slowly.

*It was really just pushing frontiers, that's all we [The Beatles] were doing.

* Somebody said to me, 'But The Beatles were anti-materialistic.' That's a huge myth. John and I literally used to sit down and say, 'Now, let's write a swimming pool.'

GEORGE HARRISON

* The Beatles somehow reached more people, more nationalities, more parts, that other bands couldn't reach

*I think we gave hope to The Beatles fans. We gave them a positive feeling that there was a sunny day ahead and that there was a good time to be had, and that you are your own person and that the government doesn't own you. There were those kinds of message in our songs.

* The more I go into this spiritual thing, the more I realize that we, The Beatles, aren't doing it but that someone else is doing it.

* The love people feel for us, we don't understand that. That's the mystic part of it, and that's the thing we should cherish, that aspect of it; to realize that.

RINGO STARR

*We were four brothers together, we supported each other. But you cannot say that it wasn't crazy days and reckless nights. That's what it is.

* We were a little band from Liverpool. What really amazed me was that people like Franco [Spain's then dictator] and Khrushchev [Russia's then dictator] aand all those world leaders were shouting at us. I could never understand that.

* Everything we did for good, and that still relates to today. "All You Need Is Love." So that's what it's about. We tried to do it with peace and love.
